

What I read online (if true) is that this brightness setting doesn't work like a traditional gamma scaler. Another example is the very first starting room, which has sort of a red atmospheric effect in the original that is not present in BFG, something the brightness setting has nothing to do with. So obviously this will only dim those, not revert them.

Cutscenes are one obvious example where, in some cases, they added new light sources.

However there are some areas with changed lighting and effects (for a couple different reasons), so lowering the intensity won't revert those sorts of developer modifications. Most locations in the game will now look as expected. So this will pull the majority of areas back down to normal. I think the majority of areas are roughly the same, just with the intensity of the lighting cranked up.
